Allegan is famous for the Second Street Bridge, a rare hand-operated swing bridge over the Kalamazoo River. Built in 1886, it’s one of the few remaining operational swing bridges in Michigan and is a defining symbol of the city.
Downtown Allegan is filled with preserved Victorian-era buildings from its lumber boom days. The standout is the Allegan County Courthouse, an 1889 Richardsonian Romanesque structure designed by architect Franklin Pierce Burnham. It sits dramatically on a hill overlooking the river and is considered one of Michigan’s most beautiful county courthouses.
Unlike many small inland towns, Allegan is built directly along the Kalamazoo River, with riverwalks, parks, and views that give it a scenic, almost storybook feel — especially in fall.
Allegan hosts the long-running Allegan County Fair, established in 1852. It’s one of Michigan’s largest county fairs and draws visitors from across the state for rides, livestock shows, and concerts.
The surrounding countryside is known for farming, orchards, and especially equestrian facilities. Allegan County is one of Michigan’s top agricultural regions, reinforcing the town’s rural character.
Nearby is the Allegan State Game Area, one of the largest contiguous blocks of public land in southern Michigan. It offers hiking, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing.
In the 1800s, Allegan was a thriving lumber town thanks to the Kalamazoo River transporting timber. That prosperity funded many of the impressive buildings that still define the downtown today.
